Building the new wharekai is the second stage of our building programme.
The first
stage was our wharenui Te Ihi o Nehua and the third stage will be a new ablution block.

Name of the wharekai

This name was decided when we chose the name for our wharenui Te Ihi o Nehua.   The kōrero around calling the wharekai Te Tawaka was that:

·         The wharenui was named after our tupuna Eru Nehua and it was only right that
the wharekai be named after his wife so the two could stand side by side –
      husband and wife.

·         Te Tawaka was loved and respected in her own right as a mother, grandmother,
aunty and as someone who demonstrated manaakitanga in the way she related
      to people.

·         In the realm of tapu and noa the wharenui is the place where tapu surrounding
manuhiri and other ‘take Māori’ are observed. One way of removing that tapu is
when people move to the wharekai to partake of kai. Eru Nehua has a high
status and his wife Te Tawaka has a high enough status to remove the tapu from
people coming forth from Te Ihi o Nehua.

Wharekai Plans

Te Tawaka will sit beside Te Ihi o Nehua. Floor plans will be posted soon.
