Back in the Good Old Days...
I remember going to watch the movies at the old Majestic and having to stand for 'God Save the Queen' before they played the movie. I remember the guy who used to wander around at half time selling jaffas, lollies, icecreams and other goodies. It was great fun rolling jaffas down the stairs to listen to the cool racket they made or throwing them off the balcony when the lights went out...hilarious!...especially if you got a squawk from someone down below! I remember being at Maketu at the whanau whare as a kid and sharing spooky stories at night with all the cousins and scaring ourselves stupid. I remember sleeping three or four kids in a bed topping and tailing and giggling nervously under the blankets while we waited for the kehua to get us. I remember going down to the inlet with my kuia and watching her fish with a handline and feeling really cool coz she always seemed so calm and serene and she made me feel that way too. I remember getting pipi with my aunties and scoffing them with chips and bread with heaps of butter and washing it all down with Lemon and Paeroa and thinking that was just the best kai in the world. I remember going to work with dad and him letting me steer the truck and what a lot of fun that was. I remember that being a kid surrounded by whanau was really cool and I sometimes wish that I could just wind the clock back and do it all again.

Growing up in Tokoihi (named after our tupuna) St, Ohinemutu meant having baths at uncle Alec's place on the corner and watching steam come out of all ngawha around our area. I had many growlings from auntys and uncles as I bothered them during their work in the kitchen or played bulrush on the Marae Atea or as we kids threw stones into the lobster pool. We spent time scaring visiting relatives at the urupa by St Faiths and were quite entertained by our 'pakeke' after marae gatherings when they made their way back down the hill from the Lakehouse. Swimming at the Utuhina and running back for a bath to warm up again ... neverending really!aa
