Marae Trustees

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE TAUMATA O TE RA MARAE TRUSTEES
By Whatanui Kereama
When the land at Halcombe was purchased in May 1988, a Trust Deed was drawn up and five Trustees were nominated, namely Ngāpukapuka, Taumata, Tūkawekai, Te Pueatanga and Te Whetumārama o te ata.
On the 12 June 1990 an application was made through the Maori Land Court, Palmerston North to gain a "Maori Reserve" designation. After making our application we were asked to provide a list of the proposed Trustees. Subsequently a representative from each of the descent lines of Kereama Te Ngako and Waitauhi were recommended. The Maori Land Court (MLC) in their letter dated 20 Jul 1990 confirmed 14 members were appointed as Trustees.
Since then there have been many changes due to whanau members passing on or not being able to attend meetings. Members are nominated by their whanau, and through the trustees committee they are then approved by the MLC.
