Wananga At Tau Henare
We have had an excellent response to the wananga suggestions that was requested, the first one will be on Friday 24th April for Waiata and Weaving at Tau Henare, on the morning of the 25 April, 5am will be the Unveiling of the carving donated by carver Hoori Niha to Nga Tau e Toru, Te Kohanga Reo. The traditional ANZAC DAY dawn service at Eparaima 6.00am Saturday then back to Tau Henare for the morning service and cuppa. The wananga will conclude at around 12pm. These wanangas are an effort for the community to raise money for the Marae as there are payments for each one held although the amount is not yet known.
All you songbirds (manu tioreore) that are willing to teach songs at the wananga please come forward and give us a hand. Our talented weavers and we have many in the valley, show off your talents and hand them down, so these taonga’s will not be lost again.
Sport: The last 2 Wednesdays saw youngsters around the valley, playing impromptu games of touch and baseball. The teams were Epeha 3 and Chicken Farm who accepted the challenge in the last issue of the YAKA. After the games which finish at dark, hot kai (maori burgers) were sold for fundraising for the kura, so on any Wednesday afternoon at about 5.30pm if you are hungry pop in see Rogomau and buy some. Tommorrow she will be at the school as we play basketball at the Chapel.
At home last Saturday the seniors went down to Whangaruru in a game where the penalty was paid, for too many errors and Whangaruru taking advantage of some opportunities that opened as wide as the state highway. Still it was an enjoyable game to watch. The sausage sizzle during the game raised $41.00 for the school. .
Next game is at home against Otamatea.
Waimarie played away against Tomarata and also came away with a loss. Coach Charlie has the luxury of having a glut of players to choose from with the latest addition being the Harrison boys. Their next game sees them at Dargaville against Dargaville Old Boys
Whilst on sport Calvin Henare representing Pipiwai, scored an impressive win in his first bout at Moerewa. Calvin had been training under the guidance of Moriki at the old shop. His proud father wearing the Te Orewai colours was there to support him. Kia Kaha Calvin
HUI AT TITOKI
A hui concerning Mangakahia Area School and parents of children who have been stood down from the school was held at Korokota Marae. Some of these children had been out of school since the early age of 13 and they have been learning by correspondence, however they need social contact and attempts to get them some space at the school have not been successful. Members of the school staff and Board of Trustees had been invited to the Hui, but did not attend. Also invited was Whangarei council member Kahu Sutherland who offered his youth groups facilities and equipment to help, something that would come in handy here in Pipiwai. Although this is not the reason Pipiwai needed to have a hui.
Mangakahia Area School has had problems managing our children and finding sustainable solutions. For many of our tamariki it is getting too late.
Co-editors thoughts…
We at Pipiwai have a choice to stand up for our tamariki and give them a safe haven to learn at. Our own backdoor is available, which is our own Te Horo School. We have available grounds that could be utilised for Secondary Education Facilities
!! BRING OUR CHILDREN HOME TO TE HORO!!
Te Wananga o Aotearoa have asked to meet with the applicants who enrolled for the Computer Course, to apologise for the delay. I have asked for Monday 20 April 2009, 3pm, at the Complex.
Make a cake and enter it in the auction at the cost of $2 at the Market Day on the 18 April 2009. The cake that has the highest bid will win the accumulated entry fee. SO BE IN TO WIN.
