A SUCCESSFUL HUI
The community meeting held on Sat 1st August was attended by 28 people and the agenda included smoking on marae grounds, drinking and gambling on marae grounds. However there were two other subjects put forward by Chairperson Sam Tohu which extended the meeting and consequently, the planned AGM was postponed to a later date.
Smoking on the marae grounds has been a controversial topic since the total ban had been introduced and this time there was more support for the right to smoke on designated areas on the marae grounds. Michael Daniels debated on the fact that it was not a good look especially for our children. Len Bristow stated that decisions need to be made with consultation from the people and he believed a lot of people were not happy. After all the debates were over, smokers were given two areas which are to be developed for anyone wishing to light up whilst on the grounds and generally, a favourable decision was made(if you were a smoker). The areas chosen will be well sign posted and people fully informed.
Gambling and drinking on the marae grounds will be restricted to the sports complex and will be closely monitored by the trustees. During the footy season the rules will be adhered to by all on the sports complex ground area.
Allan Shortland was given time to speak and he asked to be allowed to do a study on the marae as part of his study to be a kaiako. His studies pertain to Raukawa’s requirements and in plain English he states no permission no pass.  He was questioned quite severely and his answers earned the support of those present.
The second item not on the agenda came from Michael who spoke of an offer of support to upgrade our Wharekai which urgently needs refurbishing, but at a great cost.  Mike stated that the Armstrong and the Rarani whanau have some expertise to help to do this and this is their koha. In short if we can have all the materials that will be needed they will plan and refurbish the whare kai. Delaraine too has offered her services to help the project.  President Rangi is always talking about what we can do to raise money like having a big gala day and  has put ideas forward for bike riding and Mike acknowledged the work done by the ladies in bringing the community closer together.  Lastly he asked if whoever does the fundraising could involve these people who have stepped forward such as Busby Lawrence who is a project manager for cooking facilities. This was well received by all present, which bodes well for the future especially as upgrading has been on the agenda for years. The meeting concluded with an important issue regarding the Kohanga and its need for improvements. They are a part of the marae and they also are looking for money so let us not dwell for too long let’s set a realistic goal and work together to achieve results whilst bringing our whanau together.

Social Night
A BRING YOUR OWN ALCAHOL Social has been planned for November and tickets need to be pre-sold and will cost $20.00. There is live music and light refreshments will be provided. A sober driver policy will be encouraged throughout the night and the money raised will be going towards the maintenance of the marae so come along bring your whanau and friends. So spread the word

.

Kia Ora Koutou,
After Nga Tau e Toru’s 25th Anniversary 13 Sept 2008 there were a few learning’s we all became aware of (whether involved directly or not)
Our own ability as whanau to make things happen
How supportive everyone in our valley is of Kohanga & the values that are encouraged there
.           How important our Tamariki are in terms of the past, present and future
And so a question inevitably became the issue....“What will the next 25yrs be like?”
How prepared are we for the future? in Pipiwai? Or because we are from Pipiwai?
We felt this was a question worthy of more discussion, one that involves all facets of our ever growing whanau.
This was not restricted to Kohanga but to all of us, our children are our future and as such we each have a vested interest in what that will be like.
Whether we live in the valley, Whangarei, Northland, New Zealand or abroad this is a question one day we each will address and for some it will be sooner rather than later.
Where everyone can come along and bring the things that are important to them. Yesterday, today, and tomorrow?
For example
-when can we get another Doctor to come out and hold regular clinics again, like Dr Reti?
-Why can’t we have footpaths so we can have an opportunity to walk, run or bike through the valley safely?
-We could get a Zebra crossing between the Kohanga/Marae and the school
-Is the renovation of Nga Tau e Toru important to you?
-If we all got involved how much more can we achieve for our Marae?
-When the time comes for our  whanau    Mauria mai ou whakaaro!
Layla Lyndon-Tonga                     Vice Chair            Nga Tau e Toru TKR
Community meeting to discuss these issues to be held 7pm 21st August at Tau Henare. Everyone, young and old welcome to put forward their ideas
Please feel free to bring something to go with a cuppa thank you

WANAGA UPDATE

In order for Eparaima Hauraki, Regional Coordinator to forward our Waiata Wananga Application to Awanuiarangi, all paper work had to comply with the expected criteria.
It may have seemed an inconvenience to some but we cannot afford any mistakes that could be costly to our efforts, and once our application has been lodged and accepted, we will receive our registration forms which we will fill in on the Friday of the 1st weekend.
Anyone wishing to register MUST have a birth certificate, marriage certificate or passport, no other form of identification will be acceptable.
All names must be written correctly, no nicknames will be accepted.
If you have to be absent please inform your Marae Coordinator.  You are allowed to have 20% of your 100 hours or 20hours away from the marae over the 5 weekends of the wananga without the marae losing putea.
Should the Waiata Wananga be interrupted by a tangi at Tau Henare on one of the designated weekends, the tangi has priority to the marae.
However, this weekend is still assumed as a Waiata Wananga, because the majority will be attending the tangi anyway.
For those who are not aware, the money that stands to be made, totals to approx $18,000 for fifty (50) registered people who attend a minimum of 80hrs, and that money will be deposited directly into the Tau Henare Marae #2 account.

This issue, and some others after it, will be informing whanau of the value of fundraising for the valley and the marae so we hope the message will be loud and clear.  Thank you all for your support.

BUY A BRICK
One of the many ideas that came out during the marae hui was to set up a “ BUY A BRICK” scheme where whanau donate money either as a family or individually and all the names  are written on a brick chart. It would help fundraise and the amount is solely up to the donors and it would be sure to be successful as whanau everywhere, even in Aussie and other countries can take part. When this is set up every one will be fully informed and there will be an open book policy where everyone can see what happens as it happens.
If you have ideas for fundraising please share them

HORTICULTURE
When this course first came to Pipiwai it was a good event for the community but a few hiccups along the journey has seen the development of sustainable thinking working its way into the minds of people. Vege gardens are slowly increasing with the help of Mike and Poata and its more than encouraging to know they are offering their help again this summer so it promises to be  a boom year for those wanting to grow. There has been a change in the landscape on some parts of the marae mainly where the water tanks are and around the shade house where plants and trees are now part of the scenery due to the students of the course who are enjoying the practical aspects of native regeneration and the beauty this topic provides. Its never too late to join so get in and have fun while you learn.
