Tau Henare Marae has been busy over the past three weeks and it has been a proud testament to this fine Te Orewai heritage and those that help to keep it and its traditions going. With the last two tangis running one after the other, then our Kohanga disco and concluding the week with the Community Market Day and 2 consecutive hui, one would be forgiven if they felt Pipiwai was just a small quiet place.
OUR MARKET DAY at TAU HENARE MARAE
The market day on Sat 3rd was another success with all the usual happenings even with a few of the regulars not here. What has been predominant in the success of these market days, has been the behind the scenes work by all the volunteers who were tireless throughout. Peka, who has always praised everyone involved and Poata who has always supported her unconditionally both deserve praise for ensuring that Pipiwais Market Days were each run as best as they could be. They, Wendy, Ani, Ada, June, Roma and Harriet make up a fundraising base any committee would be happy to have on their team. A special mention to Shirelle, Debra and all their children, who are always in there cooking and cleaning and all the mundane chores, Richard, Pat, and their whanau especially Henry( the money handler) who have been supportive to this marae. It not usual to acknowledge such a large amount of people but without them and any others that were not named the market day could have been anything but choice. The auction was again the draw card with many cakes and other items that were donated by whanau being bid for furiously. The hangi was superb.
Fundraising for the Marae has quite often been mentioned in this panui and to make it easy on the local whanau the Market Days may at times be held closer to or be in town. Profit made on this market $2000 plus Another huge effort by the community.
After the market day we gathered into the marae to begin the Community Hui concerning Pipiwai and our part in the growth strategy for Whangarei. After all the formalities Tui Shortland and her partners Julianne Tito and Julian Reweti spent the next one and a half hours explaining what Whangarei District Council intends to do for sub regional growthOver the next 30 to 50 years. They also listened to us as we gave our aspirations for the same period which included the sustainability of Pipiwai and Maori. In all, the Hui was generally accepted as pro-active and useful from the 50 plus people who attended. Of course there were the mandatory statements such as "Whangarei District Council hasn't done much for us in the past why would they change in the future." It has shown that sustainability is possible for the whanau if opportunities are identified and acted upon just like the pakeha would have in the past. A full report from Tui should be due within 3weeks. $1500.00 is to be invoiced to Whangarei District Council for the above Hui, for use of Marae and lunch provided.
