PIPIWAI’S PEOPLE YAKASole Sponsor:  RUATANGATA MOTORS                                Date;     12. 06. 2009  WHAT IS TE OREWAI UP TO?WaiataBabes, children, parents and tupuna’s grace our Whare Tupuna, Tau Henare for the fortnightly waiata nights.  When asked by Len Bristowe; would you like to change it to once a month in case you get bored with these fortnightly practices?  The abrupt answer was; NO WE WANT IT EVERY FORTNIGHT OR ‘WE WILL’ GET BORED.  How’s that for commitment. The presence of Wahine (nee Paul) her whanau and many more new faces was a sight for sore eyes, Wahine’s input in the tutoring was awesome.  It’s inspiring to have so many people in Te Orewai who can generate the interest and discipline of revamping the old and relatively new songs within our rohe.  Mere Phillips’ dedication to these practice nights, after her daughter’s graduation in Hamilton she returned to be here with her iwi to also take on the tutoring, Len’s forthrightness regarding commitment, tikanga and just being a whanau and helping each other.  To all the ladies from Ororua and Te Horo who constantly supply all the kai thank you, thank you, thank you very much, your heartfelt kindness does not go unnoticed.  Next waiata practice Friday 19 June P Tipene  WANANGA UPDATEA Presentation was held at Mangamuka this Saturday to enlighten those who wish to participate in Marae funded wananga’s. Although the focus was on community education of maori tikanga the possibility of getting serious amounts of putea toward maraes certainly shouldn’t be overlooked and to help Pipiwai start the ball rolling coordinator for Awanuiarangi Wattie Cooper and Eb will be at Tau Henare Marae to speak about the processes involved and to answer questions you have,   Wednesday at 7.00pm   please turn up your help is importantJ Luisi   FUNDRAISING IN PIPIWAISomething of interest is the amount of fundraising that has happened over the past year in this community and during a recession too. Nga Tau e Toru Te Kohanga Reo have raised money through hangis, cake auction, ice cream sales a stall in the Ngati Hine festival  and recently a kids disco. Te Horo School has sausage sizzle or Maori burgers each week, Maori burgers on Wednesday nights for after school sports and $50 raffles, to take the whole school to Auckland to complete the Science study that never occurred in the past years, the visit to Kelly Tarlatans is the bonus for our tamariki. Te Komiti Wahine o Tau Henare has been trying everything from raffles, bonus numbers and market days. The Waa Sheila’s coordinated the Tikipunga fundraiser for Tau Henare Marae. The amazing part is the fun and support of the whole community, something that holds value especially during hard times. Choooooice!!!!!   Next Market Sat 11 JulyJ Luisi & Co Editor    WATER PRESENTATIONTo those of you who had the pleasure of an informative presentation, we can only surmise it went off pretty well.  The Yaka have not received any backlash regarding the above, we take it, and it had to have been successful.  To all the Ororua and Te Horo Crew who steered the kitchen, thank you, thank you, thank you all very, very much.P Tipene

SRD3

First paper, Preserves and Herbs, preserves and herb sauces we ate or gave away and herb and winter vege garden is flourishing at Te Horo School.  Second paper, Propagation and Native Re-vegetation, course students had the pleasure of doing exactly that, by the complex, water tanks and driveway to the Complex.  99.9% of all native plants eco-sourced from our own haven, namely Patutahi, Omauri, Kaikou and Morningside.  There is a possibility of a 2 day Marae Landscaping Workshop in the near future, Tau Henare may get lucky and get a facelift, hold your breath some would say.  Whanau are also getting into the native landscaping buzz and the escalation of interest is noticeable in the valley. Third paper, Orchard planning and planting is also an integral part of the course.  Where, how and what to plant are important aspects we had not noted in the old orchards that used to grace our valley.  All our tupuna’s had the knowledge and we just took it for granted that those trees would live forever.  Orchard planned and planted at Omauri.  This level of our amazing journey with the SRD course is drawing to a close, however; grafting and pruning are yet to be completed by the end of this term.  Hopefully SRD4 will begin in the new term. Everyone is aware of the horticulture course and it is one where we do not have a hard and fast system of rules, you are all welcome to pop in for a cuppa and chat about gardening.  P Tipene       SPORTS

  Comic CornerTypical maori ingeniousness!

An old Maori man lived alone at his family home in the Hokianga. He
wanted to dig his kumara garden, but it was very hard work. His only
son, Hone, who used to help him was in the new Ngawha prison. The old
man wrote a letter to his son and described his predicament.

Kia ora e Hone
I am feeling pretty bad because it looks like I won't be able to plant
my kumara garden this year. I'm just getting too old to be digging up
the hard ground for my garden plot.  I know if you were here, all my
troubles would be over because being a good son I know you would dig the
garden plot for me.
Aroha nui Papa

A few days later he received a reply from his son.

E Pa
For god's sake don't dig that garden. That's where I buried the bodies.
Love Hone

At 4am the next morning, the Whangarei C.I.B and the local police
arrived with a search warrant and dug up the entire area without finding
any bodies. They apologised profusely and left.

Later the same day the old man received another letter from his son.

E Pa
Go ahead and plant your kumara now. That's the best I could do under the
circumstances.
Love Hone
