Wananga, dummy run gets the nod overall, huge response and enthusiasm.  Len Bristowe, Tohu Whanau and Mere Phillips who were involved in leading the waiata written by Matiu Tohu, excelled their enthusiasm to the newies.

The raranga was as exciting.  Learning the reasons why, when and how to cut the korari, preparation of the material and the actual weaving. So proud, to have so many learned weavers in our valley such as Matetumoana Henare, Sheryll Harrison (nee Neho) and Mere Phillips. The knowledge and patience they all have for the newies was awe inspiring.  Noticeably so when Mata Black, (a natural teacher in her own right) an adult student who was taught how to weave a gift basket, teaching a young boy between the ages of 8-10 to weave the same type she had been taught on the day.  The sole reason for the wananga was to hand down the knowledge to us, our tamariki and mokopuna, to encourage them to do likewise after we close our eyes.

Thanks to the ladies namely Ripeka Nathan, Harriet Fagavao and Wendy Tohu who steered the kitchen and cleaned up the Tupuna Whare afterwards.  Your unnoticed work is priceless. Anzac Day, at 5am was the powhiri and blessing of the whakairo, then on to Eparaima Marae to begin the Dawn Services for the Anzacs then returned to Tau Henare to honour the rest of our unsung heroes.  The whole morning was a spiritually moving experience.

Pipiwai Wharekai, have had the glass louvers and door panels replaced.  Glass donated by Ani Wyatt (nee Tana) and Irene Shortland, cut by Northland Glass Whangarei at the cost of $20 (paid by the community Market Day fundraising effort) transported by courtesy of old Mr Nathan and his partner in crime old Mr Luisi.

A huge thank you to old Mr Luisi, for the drive behind asking around for glass, measuring, the multiple sized glass panels to ensure perfect fit for all the windows, and refitting the panels.

Birthday congratulations to Wiremu Porter, 60 golden years of clean healthy living.       FORTHCOMING EVENTS Friday 8 May, 6pm Waiata wananga at Tau Henare.  Please bring your own sheet if you intend to stay at the Marae and a plate of food, thank you.  The Program will be; 6pm                             Mihi Whakatau - Karakia 6.30pm – 7.30pm       Dinner & clean up, 7.30pm -10pm            Waiata10pm -10.30pm          Cuppa 10.30pm                      Waiata

Good old Mr Philips (Bilo) and his mokos Sione and Quintay for lending a hand to old Mr Daniels, Paka and Shortland Rose to cut, chop and load firewood for Te Horo School for the coming winter months and this in between helping Jack and Puti correct a few minor errors on their current project.  Awesome guys, but wait there’s more, young Blackie is also on hand to help and as the old saying goes “Many hands make light work”
