PIPIWAI’S PEOPLE YAKASole Sponsor:  RUATANGATA MOTORS

                                               Kohanga Is Still Operating

Kia ora Te whanau

On Thursday 5 Nov, a community hui was called to discuss the situation of our Kohanga building.

A few months ago Kohanga National Trust, sent an Assessor to evaluate the extent of repairs on the building (Nga Tau e Toru) to meet the Kohanga National Trust Code of Compliance

It was found that our building is unsafe, to have our tamariki/mokopuna in.  After extensive discussion, the Marae Committee Chairman offered the use of the Marae, Wharekai and toilet facilities as a short term resolution, until Christmas.

SO EVERYONE WE ARE STILL OPERATING, KOHANGA HAS NOT CLOSED.Tina Clarke. Editors note:

The feelings of mixed emotions expressed by the community members  who were at the hui, were evident as they spoke of disappointment for our tamariki who will be the ones most affected if suitable premises are not found for them and by suitable it must be approved  in accordance with the standards of the Kohanga National Trust. So let’s spare a thought for an embattled group of whanau who have a difficult road ahead because of a long standing problem that was always known about but not addressed until the inevitable happened. A hui to discuss the future of Nga Tau E Toru and the Kohanga is to be held and we will definitely be letting you know as soon as a date is set

HIKOI DAYTuesday 8th December 2009Kia ora te whanau o Te Orewai:The Kohanga Reo National Trust Board is organising a ‘Hikoi day’ to fundraise for the Whangarei Hospital, supporting services towards tamariki and whanau.  Nga Tau E Toru Te kohanga Reo will be participating in this ‘Hikoi Day’ along with the other Kohanga Reo around Whangarei. The ‘Hikoi day’ will consist of:a)  A total of five checkpoints, where a stamp will be given at each checkpointb)  THE CATCH – The tamariki must sing for their stamp at each checkpoint.c)  Nga tamariki/mokopuna are required to seek sponsorship from whanau and community, to complete the ‘Hikoi’.  Nga tamariki/mokopuna o Nga Tau E Toru has forms available for sponsorship. Please be kind and support all our tamariki/mokopuna by sponsoring them in this very worthy cause.  All whanau are most welcome to come along to watch and support our tamariki/mokopuna.Venue details will be given soon as The Kohanga Reo National Trust Board releases them to us.Noho ora maiNga Tau E Toru Te Kohanga Reo Whanau Twilight Sports 4th and 5th weekThe teams were all assembled and ready to start early on the 3rd week of twilight. Positions have Young Bloods first, with premiers Chicken Farm in second place and hotly pursued by Pipiwain Family. Games are kept to a 30 minute/ game timetable and teams have been good in providing refs when needed and good competition makes this years competition a joy to watch. The only disappointing aspect is that some people are drinking alcohol, smoking and swearing on the School and Chapel grounds and also leaving their butts on both premises and this really is,  “not nice” so whanau, please remind each other not to because we may not be allowed to have these types of events on these grounds. Also “not nice”, is having to growl tamariki who ride their bikes into the Chapels’ garden or onto the court whilst a game is on. We’re all there for fun so let’s keep it like that. Week 5 has seen a change in the leader board with Chicken Farm muscling their way into first place over the Young Guns and Pipiwain Family still cruising in 3rd place. Although they’re in forth place, Townies are having a great time and could threaten at the last few rounds.  It’s great to see Hoori Paul refereeing a game and keeping things honest. Anyway enough of that stuff come on down if you’re in the neighborhood between 6pm and 8.30pm on Thursdays and support your team or buy some kai and support the school you will be really happy you did.  FUNDRAISING GOSSIPAs you are all aware one of our big fundraising events happens next weekend on 21 November   when our Social kicks off and hopefully it will be a total success. We would like to thank those who have helped us begin this part of our journey and because some people are whakama when we acknowledge them there will not be any names mentioned this time just “thank you.” For those of you who know them Ae Marika are one of Northlands’ well known bands and it was an offer by a member to play free for us that allows us to put this event on and man it will be great to have your support. The touch tourney was unfortunately postponed because of double booked fields but this has encouraged us to have it locally at the school and the marae probably in February and probably at the same time as the marae “Karoke and Dinner” if both the organizers agree. You never know what could happen in these times.  Our Kura hosted lunch for the Annual Trail Bike ride. This the second time the trail bikes had come through Pipiwai and the majority of the riders spoke highly of the trail they had been through but they all agreed the hospitality and food were outstanding and that bodes well for our community .  Congratulations to those who helped make this fundraising effort a success and the  organizers say that if we’ll have them they’ll be back next year. After costs a total of $700 was made. Rumor has it there will be a Disco held for the older Kids very soon so keep your nose to the ground and start practicing those moves.Last but not least the School Fete is on Sat Dec 5th and stalls will be available for $10. There will be lots of fun events such as three legged races, sponge the School staff gumboot throwing and more. The whole thing is that a great day is planned. Free Tangihanga/ Funeral InsuranceFree insurance for your funeral is offered by the Te Rau Aroha Trust when your two nominated whanau members will be paid up to $15,000 subject to application being accepted by the insurance company and on delivery of proof of your death. It is for all Maori or their non Maori partners aged 55 and 73 years of age and of good People interested should catch up with Freeman Paul and he’ll arrange a meeting at the marae with a Representative of the company early next week.  This company works throughout NZ and is called Te Rau Aroha Trust. It’s a good thing that your whanau need not worry about the costs of your tangi when they will need to.   Future Events Reminder  1.
