What's On in Ngati Hine?

Tena koutou e nga uri a Hineamaru, Te Ahuareka o Ngati Hine – the Ngati Hine festival was a huge success yesterday with thousands of people converging on the Porowini marae, Otiria to celebrate our Ngati Hinetanga and whanaungatanga, to showcase talent, to have fun and generally soak up the ‘ahuareka’ atmosphere. A brilliantly fine day greeted everyone and the talent was evident throughout as the fantastic Kapa Haka and all the various entertainers performed on stage in an extravaganza of flair and ability that entertained the huge crowd.  The stage routines culminated in performances by the big three acts, Da Boyz (featuring Tukaha Milne), Huaki Puanaki and Ruia Aperehama.  Congratulations to all the Kapa Haka who performed so well and to Te Puao for winning the overall aggregate prize. The many food stalls kept people fed and watered with a huge variety of foodstuffs. The information stalls provided interest areas as well which included a whakapapa venue, mirimiri, art exhibition, mau rakau and many other significant pursuits. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of the day – you’re roles both large and small resulted in a kaupapa we can all be proud of as Ngati Hine and which we can keep building on for the future. Speaking of which, the organizing committee have not decided on what the future of the festival will be, so your thoughts and feedback are welcome.

28th Oct  NgatiHine Launch

On Tuesday 28th of October 2008, Te Runanga o NgatiHine launched 3 very important Iwi intiatives at Kawiti Marae in Waiomio :

* Te Pae Tawhiti – the Ngāti Hine Strategic intent document
* The Ngāti Hine Iwi Environmental Management Plan
* The new Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Hine website

The venue was chosen because the launch is about ‘strategy’. Our tupuna Kawiti was a brilliant ‘strategist’ and hence the choice of the Kawiti marae. The 28th of October is significant because it was the day that Kawiti signed Te Whakaputanga o Niu Tireni or the Declaration of Independence in 1835.

18th Oct Hui

Two very successful Ngati Hine hui were held on Saturday 18th October:

1.      Te Roopu kaumatua, kuia o Ngati Hine hui was held at the Mohinui marae, Waiomio in the morning with an excellent turn out. One of the key kaupapa was that Te Roopu Kaumatua, kuia will now get fully behind the Ngati Hine Claims which is being led by the Te Aho Claims Alliance.  Therefore, this hui was the first of a number of hui as Ngati Hine prepares itself to put its case against the Crown in the near future.

The overall aim is to communicate the Claims process and intended outcomes to all Ngati Hine and to go to the impending Waitangi Tribunal Hearings with a united front and a clear and coherent case represented by our best exponents.

Much of the korero focused on the prophecy said by Kawiti in Jan, 1846 after the battle of Ruapekapeka, ‘Waiho kia kakati te namu i te wharangi o te pukapuka, ko reira ka tahuri atu ai’

As you may well know, Waitangi Tribunal Judge, Craig Coxhead has only last Friday announced that the first Treaty Claims hearing will start in October, 2009 with a focus on Te Whakaputanga o Niu Tireni and Te Tiriti o Waitangi.  This hearing will be held at Waitangi.

The hui whakawhanaungatanga with our neighbouring hapu has established a strong foundation to work together and Treaty Claims will be one of those.

Thank you to our Mohinui whanaunga who hosted us all so well at this hui.

2.      Ngati Hine then traveled to the Whakapara marae in the afternoon and were hosted by Ngati Hau.  As with our other hui ‘whakawhanaungatanga’, the connections with Ngati Hau were illustrated and explained.  The process was excellent and the outcome even better.

The upshot is that everyone reiterated that Ngati Hau and Ngati Hine can do so much more together and that the Treaty Claims is the place to start.  This work on the Claims will start immediately.

4th OctHui

A Whanaungatanga hui was held at the Karetu marae on the 4th of October with Ngati Manu, and it was a great success. The wananga was led by Hirini Henare and Erima Henare who covered key whakapapa links as well as historical stories etc. And of course the Rugby game in 1983 was recounted many times as well!

The outcome was that we are clearly the same people and that there is a willingness and energy to work together. With the Treaty Claims on the horizon, this hui has provided both Ngati Hine and Ngati Manu with a strong basis to move forward together in a proactive way.
