Porangahau Marching for their rights - Waitangi Day

by angela on 4 Feb 2010

Kia Ora Whanau,
One of our whanau sent this to me,

Just a little bit of history you might like to know about......

The Wreck at Black Head was the Schooner Maroro Built in 1904 at Whangaroa by Lane and Brown boat builders (Totara North) That company has only just closed down about five years ago. It was 230.0 Tons 126.2 feet long the Beam was 29.4 and the draught was 7.6.
It was wrecked at Porangahau in 1927 as records show.

Cheers Diane Kernan, from Awanui in the North.

There is some good news, the track is marked and 6 new gates are in through to the other side of the pine trees. The bad news, its pretty impassable in places, infact the best mode of transport would be a horse. Does anyone have contact with Nutnut Eriha, he would be good to have along. So we have drains to cross, pine trees to get through and a rather wide and deep stream on the other side. I had read in a letter from Frank Gordon to the Council that the HB Regional Council and the Gordons have erected a fence at the far end. All will become clear Saturday. A good stratergy would be for as many bikes as possible to go up and down and break down the track. Or to bring a tractor and trailer.

We are all excited here and so pleased to know we have such a lot of support. So please bring your sunblock, lunch, bottled water or flask and we will see you Saturday. Dont forget your flags and banners.

We do need you to show up as there are still moves to stop this Hikoi, we are determine to walk. So do join us.

Marina
