Ngati Makino Heritage Trust

Our whakapapa defines us.  Because we are born with Ngati Makino whakapapa, we are grandchildren or “mokopuna of the iwi.”

Being born of Ngati Makino not only gives us rights but also imposes obligations.

It is very important that we, many of who are isolated by distance from our ancestral homelands, contribute to the upliftment and strengthening of our Iwi, our Hapu, our Marae, our Whenua, and each other.  One way we can do this is by registering to the Ngati Makino Heritage Trust.

Awhina Awhemate, Office Administrator for the Trust, says:

Ngati Makino Heritage Trust was mandated at numerous hui, by hui attendees to negotiate our Treaty Claim with the Crown, through a Deed of Settlement.  To receive any benefits from this settlement you must be registered with the Ngati Makino Heritage Trust.

Specialist Advisors were contracted to research our population statistics, and they believe Ngati Makino to be somewhere between 8,500 and 10,000 descendants.

As you can imagine, it is no easy feat acquiring 8,500 registrations.

Ngati Makino have 6 Marae.  If you have a link to any of these Marae then you are more than likely to be of Ngati Makino Descent.
