Whare Nikau
"Our Taonga, Our Place"


A week long project was held on Puatahi Marae where traditional building methods and skills were used to build Whare Nikau. Thirty five students from Kaipara College in Helensville and Unitec joined together to build Whare Nikau.

Kaumatua me Kuia me nga whanau katoa were also there to manaaki this beautiful taonga being built and was observed by many of how this workshop blended traditional with modern learning in a maori environment.

Materials used to build Whare Nikau was gathered from Mt Atuanui and prepared on Puatahi Marae. The energy and passion of this workshop was an experience shared by all.
