Kauri Team
On Saturday 27th September 2008 we had an outstanding day for all iwi that particpated and competed against each other in their colours at this year's iwi of origin sporting event held in North Harbour.
Iwi across the nation came together to battle it out in touch rugby, netball, golf and two new events waka ama and the amazing race.
Ngatiwhatua Ki Kaipara submitted three teams (Kauri, Ponga and Ngahere) for the Amazing Race and was up against Waikato and Ngapuhi. A team for golf was also submitted.
Kauri Team (Hori Brown, Hori Manukau, Mccaela Panui, Pania Nahi) of Ngatiwhatua Ki Kaipara won first place in the amazing race and received a North Harbour bag with goodies. Ponga Team came runners up and Te Hira Mayall-Nahi who is 8 years of age was the youngest team member to participate in the amazing race.
The amazing race is an event where team members have to complete a task given and take a photo with you and your whole team to show proof that the task was completed. For example tasks included: searching for a memorial stone of a waka landing in Devonport, the Navy Base marae, searching for the Sports House at the North Harbour Stadium, spin a spinning top with a harakeke for 30 seconds etc.
An iwi banner competition was also held and the winners for the banner went to Te Rarawa. TAUKE!!
Overall, it was a great turnout with whanau of all ages particpating and was a well-organised event. Next year for 2009 iwi of origin will be held in South Auckland so gear up whanau and see you there. Remember, its all about participation and whakawhanaungatanga.
