It's official. A full settlement of claims was reached today (Thu 25 Sept 2008) relating to the Affiliate Te Arawa Iwi and Hapu Claims Settlement Bill being passed into law.
The bill had its second reading on Tuesday 23 September, while the third and final reading was completed today.
This settlement has been a long time in the making and it's due to the hard work of many of our koeke, some who have since passed on, who must be acknowledged.
They have put in place, a way forward for our people to develop a strategic framework and infrastructure that will ensure we have the capacity to fend for ourselves in terms of economic, social and cultural well-being and environmental sustainability.
Granted, it's not going to be easy but at least we have the opportunity to improve ourselves instead of having to rely on others. We should be the makers of our own destiny.
