On 5 February 2008 at Ngati Manu Marae, Karetu, Kelvin Davis was confirmed as the Labour Party Candidate to contest the electorate of Te Tai Tokerau in the 2008 general election. It was a proud day for Ngati Manu with the Prime Minister Rt Hon Helen Clark and national media in attendance. This occasion is believed to be the first time Prime Minister had visited Ngati Manu.
