Congratulations RMU

First prize NZ Transport Agency Award

The Ngati Hau RMU worked with NZ Transport Agency, Fulton Hogan and OPUS on the Towai Slip Project. It was noticed that existing vegetation was only growing on half of the road side site. The project was to use alternative planting methods to test what plants if any would grow on the site. For students at the Sustainable Rural Development course at Akerama marae this was an ideal opportunity to participate in a real life conservation project.
NZ Transport Agency has an assessment team in each region and they pick a project or initiative each month to recognise work and people who have made a difference in making highways safe and stable and using local people and resources to get good outcomes for the environment and the community.
This was a great example of working with local iwi and hapu working with agencies. Hopefully the beginning of more opportunities to work together.

Ngati Hau Environmental Management Plan

The Ngati Hau Environmental Management Plan (NEMP) was developed to provide guidelines and policies to support management of environmental issues in the Ngati Hau rohe. This also provides consistency in developing relationships and work practices.

The original NEMP was developed and signed off by the Ngati Hau trust Board in 2006.

You can see a copy of the plan here.

The plan is currently being reviewed. The draft plan has been completed and will be presented at Ngati Hau marae trust or committee meetings by August 2012. This provides marae with the opportunity to consult with their members and provide feedback about the plan.

You can see a copy of the draft plan here. You can send feedback about this draft to the Resource Management Unit - see contact details above.

The plan is due to be launched with key stakeholders in November 2012.
