Te Pukeko

Te Pukeko came about in March 2001 when cuzzies Anita and Suzie joined the Motatau Marae Whanau Committee (Motatau Marae Ladies Committee).  Around that time, the Whanau Committee recognised that our kumara vine hadn't been working as efficiently as it had in the past and we saw that breakdown in communication as a major barrier to our whanau participating in marae affairs and events.

So, in March 2001, we decided to introduce a marae newsletter as a means of bridging the communication gap and put out the first Pukeko . We decided to call the newsletter the Pukeko because they, and possums, were the most visible wildlife around Motatau then, and we certainly weren't going to name it after an import. Pukeko seemed to be making a comeback around then as well, so we thought it appropriate we call it "Te Pukeko".

The main purpose of the Pukeko is to allow our Motatau whanau to communicate with each other, and to allow the Marae Trustees to keep us all up to date on what's happening at the Marae.

If you would like to be added to the mailing list, or if you want to share news or panui birthdays, weddings, hui, unveilings, fundraising, social events and wananga in our next issue, please email Suzie at  tips@ihug.co.nz
