Motatau Marae

The people of Motatau are of Ngati Te Tarawa which is a hapu ririki of Ngati Hine.

Motatau marae was built in the 1920’s, to honour our Northern Maori Member of Parliament (MP) Tau Henare, so that he could entertain his many guests.

His home, Omahu, is located next to the marae. Dignitaries such as Te Puea Herangi, Sir Apirana Ngata, Prime Minister Gordon Coates and Maui Pomare were amongst many who were entertained at the marae during his term in Parliament (1914 - 38).
