Re: Governor Generals visit to Hukanui Marae
This was a special honour for both the marae and the Indian/pakeha community of Gordonton. At the request of the Hon Anand Satyanand, it was his wish to visit a local marae of the region to coincide with his many visits throughout the wider Hamilton, Waikato area. Marae representative Wiremu Puke and the Aide de Camp to the Governor General co-ordinated the visit which was inclusive of only a two hour window in order for him to meet his other engagements for the day.
The whanau was given less than seven days notice of the event but in true Hukanui Marae style, the plan was activated and the troops took action. Decorations, pot plants, shopping, sound system, ringawera it was the scaled down version of Poukai. Lots of activity and high stress levels. Aunty Mutual as always took charge of the mahau, Sandra and Kare for the shopping, Jackson lawns and minor maintenance, Uncle Tuku, Aunty Cilla, Aunty Bussy Whaea Janie, Matua Haunui te hau kainga whanui tonu were all on board. Te kohanga Reo, Te Ara rima, Nga Taiatea, Gordonton Primary School and the wider community all had a role to play, and contributed to what was a truly magnificent day.
Special mention needs s to be made to the Indian community that arrived from as far as Auckland. They arrived with massive pots of delicious Indian cuisine and instruction on how to prepare it. This was a particularly significant time for them and Uncle Hare in his opening korero acknowledged their most recent and tragic loss of one of their own that same week. This occasion installed a huge sense of community and an opportunity to acknowledge our unique differences. In keeping with the true meaning of manaaki tangata, Hukanui Marae whanau does it admirably every time.
