Wānanga with with Whatarangi Winiata (Ngāti Raukawa)
An innovator in the renaissance of Māori education for thirty years,
Emeritus Professor Whatarangi Winiata, served as tūmuaki of Te Wānanga o
Raukawa until 2007. Contributions to the life of the Wānanga as a Purutanga
Mauri and in other ways combine with creative activity, politics and writing
to keep the professor busy.
Constitutional reform (particularly in the Anglican Church) since 1976,
advocacy of Māori broadcasting since initiating with broadcaster Derek Fox
the New Zealand Māori Council's application for the third television channel
in the early 1980s, direction of the 25 year experiment in tribal
development of the Raukawa Marae Trustees, and a New Zealand Māori Council
negotiator in the "Sealord's settlement", the Crown Forestry Rental Trust
settlement and the State Owned Enterprises settlement are some of the
activities that have combined with his work at the Wānanga.
In 1975 Whatarangi established and directed Whakatupuranga Rua Mano, a
25-year programme in development for the hapū and iwi of the Confederation
of Te Ati Awa, Ngāti Raukawa and Ngāti Toarangatira. Those with an interest
in or responsibility for Māori economic development, community development
and public policy will hear his thoughts on the contribution of hapū, iwi
and marae and other topics at Ngā Tauira a Māui Wānanga on 11th and 12th
November. The President of Te Tūrangapū Māori will also speak on the
survival of Māori as a people. He will describe the place of
entrepreneurship through the expression of kaupapa tuku iho. For more
